"Machine-to-machine payment is becoming a settled layer of the agent stack. In 2026 the largest carriers in payments and cloud each shipped or standardized a rail by which software agents pay per call in stablecoins. The window is the edge, not the rail: per-call data and services sold to agents, seller-side charging for existing APIs and catalogs, and the facilitation layer between them. The phase is supply-led: the rails are arriving faster than the paying demand on them."

3. x402 Foundation membership above the 57 organizations counted on October 19, 2026.

At 180 days, April 30, 2027:

1. One protocol family in general availability at two or more founding platforms.
2. Adjusted settled value above $10 million in a single month on a named measurement method.
3. At least one independent (non-platform) seller publicly reporting revenue earned from agent payments.

KILL CRITERIA

The call is wrong if, by April 30, 2027, the open protocols have collapsed into a single closed platform rail with no open standard in general availability; or adjusted settled value has printed flat or down across two consecutive published measurements; or the x402 Foundation shows no membership growth and no shipped interoperability between families.
